[CA] CALPADS Update Flash #303 – Reporting Summer Graduates in CALPADS

The California Department of Education (CDE) released CALPADS Update Flash #303 on June 9, 2025, to guide Local Educational Agencies (LEAs) in reporting high school students who graduate or complete requirements during the summer—before the August 15 deadline. These students, often called “summer graduates,” can be included in key reporting metrics if documented properly.

Who Are Summer Graduates?

Students who finish graduation or completion requirements after the end of the regular school year and before August 15 are classified as “summer graduates.” Correctly reporting them ensures they appear in:

  • One-year graduate/completer reports

  • Four-year cohort reports

  • Five-year cohort reports (if applicable)

📝 Reporting Steps & Codes

Exit at Year-End

  • Use Code: E156 – GD12ContinuedEd

  • When to Use: For students who didn’t meet all graduation/completion requirements by the last day of the school year.

Re-Enroll with One-Day Records

  • When student completes by Aug 15

    • Start & Exit Date: Actual completion date (same day)

    • Exit Code: E230 – CompleterExit

    • Completion Status: e.g., 100 – Graduated, regular HS diploma

Students with Disabilities (ESY)

  • Exit with the actual completion date if done before EOY 3 certification.

  • Otherwise, exit as E156 and submit a one-day re-enrollment when they complete (before August 15).

SENR0718E3 Validation Fix

  • The STAS record error for one-day summer enrollments has been resolved.

  • No need to submit STAS records for one-day E230 exits between July 1–August 15.

Note: Submitting after Aug 15 excludes students from 2024–25 reports, even if they were summer completers.

Final Recommendations

  • Exit all potential summer graduates at year-end with E156.

  • Submit one-day re-enrollments upon summer completion.

  • Don’t wait until August 15—students not entered in time will be excluded from current year reports.
